A Gift of Love...
Adolescence can be a challenging time. Teenagers are working to develop their independence and identity. While they strive to make choices for themselves, sometimes adults are amazed at their talent, insight and capacity to excel. Other times, adults are reminded that childhood was not so long ago. It is confusing and difficult to navigate relationships, pressures at school, and any family problems that may arise. The struggle is necessary for growth, but it can easily begin to feel overwhelming. This is where guidance and support can be helpful.
Developmentally, teenagers naturally do everything they can to acquire independence, which also means they may be less likely to share their feelings and struggles. Just like adults, sometimes it is difficult to speak with someone who is profoundly affected by a situation. It is also the role of the parent to provide discipline and impose consequences for bad behavior. This, unfortunately, also may mean adolescents are less likely to share the details of their life with those who love them the most.
Providing your child with the opportunity to enter counseling is a gift of love. Many times, teenagers are hesitant to speak with a stranger regarding their problems. This is to be expected. If you would like to discuss whether your child could benefit from counseling or any resistance they may have, I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you.
Youth comes but once in a lifetime.
